How should an artist handle unclear style direction?

Build a small reference board or style test and align before producing a full asset set. Solve the visible issue only and leave scale, topology, UVs and handoff problems undocumented. Change the art direction without aligning with the brief, target platform or production constraints. Hide pipeline problems inside personal files that nobody else can open or review.
